A dull chain is a safety problem

Not just a slow one. A sharp chain pulls itself into the wood and cuts under its own weight. A dull one has to be forced, and forcing a saw is how kickback happens and how bars get pinched.

The other tell is the chips. A properly sharp chain throws chips. If you are producing sawdust, it needed sharpening a while ago.

Why machine sharpening beats a file in the field

A file touch-up between tanks is good practice and worth learning. What a file cannot do reliably is keep every cutter the same length and the same angle across a whole chain.

When cutters differ, the long ones do all the work, the chain pulls to one side, and the bar wears unevenly. On a machine every cutter comes back to the same geometry, which is why a properly sharpened chain cuts straight.

Depth gauges matter too and get ignored constantly. As cutters are filed back, the rakers need lowering to match, or the chain stops taking a proper bite no matter how sharp the teeth are.

Mower blades

A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, and torn tips brown off within days. If your lawn looks tired a day after mowing, that is usually the blade rather than anything else.

We sharpen and balance them. Balance matters, since an unbalanced blade vibrates the spindle bearings apart over a season.
