Buying a mower is mostly a question about your yard rather than about the machine. Tell us the lot size, the slope, and what is in the way, and the right answer usually becomes obvious.

Which type suits what

Push and self-propelled make sense up to roughly half an acre, and self-propelled earns its money the moment you have any grade. Around the lakes here almost nothing is genuinely flat.

Riding mowers take over past that, and handle rough ground better than a zero-turn does. Better in trailer ruts and on uneven ground where a zero-turn scalps.

Zero-turns win on speed and on trimming around obstacles. If your property is dotted with trees, beds, and a shed or two, a zero-turn will cut your mowing time noticeably. On steep slopes they are the wrong tool, and on wet grass they can slide.

Deck size is not simply bigger is better

A wide deck cuts faster in open ground and becomes a liability the moment you need to get between two trees or through a gate. Measure your narrowest regular gap before deciding. Plenty of people would be better served by a smaller deck they can actually steer.
